Maskne: The Struggle is REAL
I don't know if "maskne" was an actual word prior to Covid but it most certainly is now. Estheticians know this type of acne as "acne mechanica", which is caused by excess pressure, heat and rubbing against the skin. In the case of maskne, it would be the mask.
So what is actually causing the breakouts and irritations? Friction, heat, moisture and bacteria. Wearing a mask creates a barrier to keep germs out, but it's also creating a barrier to keep sweat, oil and dirt close to our skin. Sweat, oil and dirt that have accumulated on the mask are now constantly rubbing against the skin, exposing it to not only those nasties, but also creating a high moisture environment that can break down our skin’s natural protective barrier.
What can you do to help minimize and treat maskne?
1. WASH your MASK. (think of it as an undergarment if that helps;) )
2. Forego the makeup.
3. Cleanse your skin with a gentle cleanser twice a day.
4. Keep your routine simple (cleanse, hydrate and moisturize) and without exfoliants and harsh topicals.
A common response to treating acne is to try to scrub it away or over-treat by drying it out. Here's why that's not a good idea, especially now. With our skin barrier already compromised due to wearing the mask, introducing an exfoliant will further impair the barrier and would worsen the irritation. Instead, look for products that help to calm and support the skin’s natural barrier function. I recommend Roccoco Botanicals Purifying Treatment Essence, Plant Harmonizing Serum and Peptide Serum. Keep your skincare routine simple and free of any active ingredients or save the retinol and AHA's for days at home. A gentle cleanser, a simple moisturizer and SPF are the basics of any skincare routine. Who knows, you may actually come to appreciate a more streamlined regimen.
If all else fails, a professional facial can help get your skin on the path to healing and expert advice on products geared to your skin type is always beneficial. In my studio, I also recommend LED light therapy. A quick 30-minute session under the LED panel has been proven to reduce acne-causing bacteria.
